AI Beacon/Google AI Overviews
First place, below the answer.
You can rank first while Google answers the question without you. The Overview sits above every organic result and draws on pages it can render, parse and match to the question. AI Beacon tracks the answer, not just the ranking.
A generated answer with four linked sources, sitting above every organic result.
Still first, and now roughly a screen below the answer most people read.
What is a Google AI Overview?
A Google AI Overview is a generated summary shown above the organic results for some queries, drawing on a small set of sources it links to. Being cited in one is a separate outcome from ranking: a page can hold the first organic position and be absent from the overview above it, and a page ranking far lower can be cited in it.
Key facts
- Overviews appear for some queries and not others, and the set changes over time
- Ranking first does not guarantee being cited, and being cited does not require ranking first
- The overview sits above the organic results, so it is seen before anything you rank for
- Citations link out, so presence is measurable in referral traffic in a way most AI answers are not
- Presence has to be tracked per query, because it varies query by query rather than site-wide
- This is the clearest overlap between search work and AI visibility work, since it uses the same queries

Your ranking did not move. The page did.
Answers the question directly and links a handful of sources. Whether you are among them has nothing to do with your organic position.
Exactly where it was last quarter. Now below an answer that may have already satisfied the query.
Pushed further down the page than before.
This is why rank tracking alone has stopped describing the situation. The position is accurate and no longer tells you what share of attention it earns.
Position one stopped meaning what it used to mean.
Your ranking held and the clicks went anyway
A generated answer with four links now sits above every organic result, and a large share of readers never scroll past it.
Overview presence tracked as its own metric
Which queries trigger one, and whether you are cited inside it, measured entirely separately from where you rank.
Search Console cannot tell you what happened
It reports clicks for a query and cannot separate a click on the Overview from a click on your listing underneath it.
The two outcomes split apart deliberately
Overview citations are tracked on purpose, because no standard report separates them for you and none is coming.
You are cited on some queries and invisible on others
There is no visible pattern in the dashboard, so the default response is to publish more and hope something lands.
Citation mapped query by query, over time
Presence is recorded for each query on each run, sitting next to the organic position you hold for the same term.
You rank first and the answer quotes somebody else.
The Overview draws on pages Google can render and parse, judged against the question. Your rank data alone cannot see any of that. Together the picture is unambiguous.
The Overview cites three sources. You are not one of them.
Your page renders its answer through client-side JavaScript.
The heading on that section does not match the question asked.
Position 1, impressions flat, clicks falling for nine months.
Google ranks the page and cannot quote it. The answer exists on your site, arrives after render, and sits under a heading that does not match the question, so the Overview took a thinner page that got both right.
Presence, per query, over time.
Which queries trigger one
- Whether an overview appears at all for each query you track
- How that changes, since the set is not stable
- Which of your queries are most affected by the shift
Whether you are in it
- Whether your brand is named and whether your page is cited
- Which of your pages was chosen, which is often not the one you expected
- Which competitors are cited alongside or instead of you
Against your organic position
- Queries where you rank well and are absent from the overview
- Queries where you are cited despite ranking modestly
- The first list is where the work usually is
The most useful report is the mismatch: strong ranking, no citation. It is a shortlist of pages that are already competitive and are being passed over for a reason worth finding.
The bridge between search and AI work.
Same queries, both channels
Unlike assistant conversations, these are ordinary search queries you already track. One list of queries serves both reports.
Citations that link out
Overviews cite sources with links, so presence produces referral traffic you can measure, which most AI answers do not.
Reach beyond any assistant
This sits inside Google's results page rather than behind a separate product, so the audience is far larger than any individual assistant.
