GUIDE · PART OF AI VISIBILITY TRACKING

ChatGPT visibility tracking:
what it says about you, and why.

ChatGPT is the most widely used of the AI engines, so it's usually the first one worth tracking. This guide covers what is particular to it: when it searches the web and when it doesn't, which of OpenAI's bots need to reach your site, and how its visitors show up in your analytics.

What is ChatGPT visibility tracking?

ChatGPT visibility tracking is checking, on a schedule, whether ChatGPT names and cites a brand when it's asked the questions that brand's buyers ask. ChatGPT answers in two ways: from what the model already knows, and by searching the web and citing what it finds. Tracking has to allow for both, because a brand can be present in one kind of answer and absent from the other.

Key facts

  • ChatGPT answers either from the model's own knowledge or by searching the web and citing sources
  • OpenAI runs separate bots. OAI-SearchBot builds the index for ChatGPT search, and GPTBot collects content for training
  • OpenAI says sites that opt out of OAI-SearchBot won't be shown in ChatGPT search answers
  • Blocking GPTBot keeps your content out of training. It doesn't remove you from ChatGPT search
  • OpenAI adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links in ChatGPT search, which makes those visits easy to identify
  • Visits from the ChatGPT apps often arrive with no referrer, so the true number is higher than the one you see

Why it's harder than it looks

One assistant, three things to keep straight.

Most confusion about ChatGPT comes from treating it as a single thing. It has two ways of answering and several bots, and its traffic is only partly visible.

Two kinds of answer

With search, and without

When it searches, you can see sources and influence them. When it answers from memory, what it says changes much more slowly.

Several bots

Different jobs, different rules

A robots.txt rule aimed at one can catch another. The one that matters for being found is OAI-SearchBot.

Hidden traffic

Some visits leave no trace

Clicks from ChatGPT on the web are identifiable. Clicks from the apps frequently aren't.

What to get right for ChatGPT.

None of them is difficult. Each is easy to get wrong without noticing.

The answers

Run the prompts, and keep the sources.

ChatGPT's answers vary from run to run like any engine's. What's useful here is that when it searches, it shows you what it read.

  • Repeated runsOne check will mislead you. Run each prompt several times.
  • Mentions and sources togetherNote whether you were named, and which pages were cited.
  • Answers with no sourcesThese came from the model's own knowledge, and they shift slowly.

The bots

Let the search bot in.

If OAI-SearchBot can't read your site, ChatGPT search has nothing of yours to cite. This is the first thing to check, and it takes a minute.

  • OAI-SearchBotBuilds the index behind ChatGPT search. Allow it if you want to appear.
  • GPTBotCollects content for training. Blocking it is a separate choice.
  • ChatGPT-UserFetches a page when a person's request needs it.
  • Content in the HTMLA bot that doesn't run scripts only sees what the server sends.

The traffic

Find the visits ChatGPT sends.

ChatGPT is the easiest AI engine to identify in analytics, and you'll still be undercounting it.

  • A tagged linkOpenAI adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links in ChatGPT search.
  • A referrerWeb visits arrive from chatgpt.com.
  • No trace at allVisits from the apps often carry neither, and land in direct.

How to do it

Setting it up, in five steps.

Do the second step before the others. There's little point tracking answers from an engine that isn't allowed to read you.

STEP 1

Choose the prompts

The buyer questions you want ChatGPT to name you on.

STEP 2

Check OAI-SearchBot

Make sure nothing in robots.txt, or in front of it, keeps the search bot out.

How SEORCE does it

ChatGPT, tracked beside the other engines.

AI Beacon runs your prompts on ChatGPT and the other engines it tracks, and keeps the mentions and the exact sources for each run. Technical Suite checks whether OpenAI's bots can read your pages, and Web Analytics shows the visits ChatGPT sends.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions.

Updated 15 October 2026

Ask it the questions your buyers ask, several times each, and note whether you're named. One check isn't enough, because the answer changes between runs. Tracking software does the repetition for you.

No. GPTBot is the training crawler. Appearing in ChatGPT search depends on OAI-SearchBot, which is a separate bot with its own rule.

Look for visits with utm_source=chatgpt.com, which OpenAI adds to links in ChatGPT search, and for the referrer chatgpt.com. Visits from the apps often carry neither, so some will sit in direct traffic.

There's no submission form. What you can do is make sure OAI-SearchBot is allowed to crawl your site, and that the content is in the HTML.

It writes each answer afresh, and when it searches the web it may find different sources. That is why a mention rate over many runs is more reliable than a single check.

No. It shows sources when it has searched the web. Answers from the model's own knowledge may come with none.

Yes. The free AI crawler log analyser shows which AI bots visit your site, OpenAI's included, and the AI crawler robots.txt generator writes the rules for each one.
