What is llms.txt?

Adoption is early. It is a proposal from 2024, not a standard. Google says such files are not needed for Search or its AI features, and studies in 2026 found the major AI crawlers rarely request it. How is llms.txt different from a sitemap?
A sitemap lists every indexable URL for crawlers. An llms.txt is a human-curated priority list with context, meant for AI engines doing retrieval. Think of it as "what matters most on this site".
Do I still need a regular XML sitemap if I have llms.txt?
Yes. XML sitemaps are for traditional crawlers: llms.txt is complementary, not a replacement.
Where does the file live?
At the root of your domain:

No. Pick 20 to 100 pages that genuinely matter: pricing, product capabilities, documentation, flagship articles. Padding dilutes signal.
What does an llms.txt file look like?
A short H1 with the site name, a one-paragraph summary, then markdown lists grouped by section with each entry linking to the full URL and a short description. The tool above produces a valid file.
Does llms.txt help with Google rankings?
Not directly. It is specifically for AI engines doing retrieval and citation. Normal SEO signals (content, links, technical health) still drive Google.
How often should llms.txt be updated?
When you launch major content, retire products, or restructure the site. Monthly review is enough for most sites.
Is there an llms-full.txt as well?
Some sites publish both:
