GUIDE · PART OF GENERATIVE ENGINE OPTIMIZATION

Answer engine optimization:
how to be the answer.

AEO is the oldest of the new names. It dates from the years when featured snippets and voice assistants began answering questions directly, and it now takes in AI assistants too. This guide explains what the term means today, where it sits beside SEO and GEO, and what the work involves.

What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?

Answer engine optimisation, or AEO, is the practice of shaping content so that a search engine or an AI assistant uses it as the direct answer to a question. An answer engine is anything that replies with an answer where a search engine would give a list of links: a featured snippet, a voice assistant, Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT or Perplexity. AEO describes very nearly the same work as generative engine optimisation. Its emphasis is on the question, and on the form the answer takes.

Key facts

  • An answer engine gives an answer. A search engine gives a list of links to choose from
  • The term is older than AI chat. It was first used for featured snippets and voice search
  • AEO and GEO describe largely the same work, under different names
  • AEO starts from the question: one question, answered plainly, in a place a machine can find
  • You judge it by whether your content is quoted or cited, because there is no position to rank in
  • SEORCE collects the questions people ask for each topic, and tracks whether engines use your pages to answer them

Why it's harder than it looks

Three names for one job.

AEO, GEO and LLM optimisation get sold as separate disciplines, each with its own course and its own tool. They overlap almost completely. Knowing that saves you from doing the same work three times.

The naming

AEO, GEO, LLMO

Different people coined different terms for the same shift. Pick one, and judge any advice by what it asks you to do.

The measure

There's no position one

An answer either uses your content or it doesn't. Rank tracking has nothing to report.

The credit

You can be used and not named

An engine may lift your answer and send nobody to your page. Being the source and getting the visit are separate things.

In detail

AEO comes down to three habits.

None of them is technical. They're about how a page is written and laid out.

The question

Start from what people ask.

Most pages are written around a keyword. AEO asks you to write around a question, in the words the asker would use.

  • Question searchesThe how, what, why and can searches around your topic.
  • People Also AskThe follow-up questions Google suggests.
  • Your own inboxSales calls and support tickets are full of questions, already phrased.

The answer

Answer first, then explain.

An engine looks for a short passage that answers the question by itself. If yours takes three paragraphs to get going, a shorter one will be chosen.

  • The answer in the first sentence or twoUnder a heading that asks the question.
  • Then the detailEvidence, steps, exceptions. Everything the short answer left out.
  • Complete without the rest of the pageThe passage should still make sense when it's lifted out.

The form

Lay it out so it can be lifted.

The same answer is easier to use when the page tells a machine where it starts and stops.

How to do it

Doing AEO on one page.

Answer engine optimisation, or AEO, is the practice of shaping content so that a search engine or an AI assistant uses it as the direct answer to a question.

Very nearly. Both aim to get your content used in answers. AEO puts the weight on the question and the form of the answer, and GEO on the whole job, including tracking and sources. The GEO guide covers the full method.

Anything that replies with an answer where a search engine would give a list of links. That includes featured snippets, voice assistants, Google's AI Overviews and AI assistants such as ChatGPT and Perplexity.

No. Answer engines draw on pages that can be crawled and that rank, so the SEO foundations still carry the weight. AEO changes how you write the page.

It helps a machine read a page's questions and answers. Don't count on it changing how your result looks in Google, and don't expect it to earn a citation by itself.

By whether you're quoted or cited for the questions you care about. Track each question on each engine over repeated runs, and watch for visits from AI tools.

For the structure, yes. The GEO-friendly content checker and the schema validator show how a page is laid out for a machine, and the browser extension audits any page you open. Whether an engine quotes the page needs tracking.
