Pagination Audit

Enter a paginated series URL (e.g. category page 1). The audit crawls the first N pages and checks canonical consistency, noindex rules, rel=prev/next, and crawl-trap signals. Flags the four most common pagination mistakes.
Technical SEO Intelligence
Enterprise sites waste more crawl budget on pagination mistakes than on any other technical issue.
Canonical-to-page-1 breaks internal link signals. Noindex, follow eventually becomes noindex, nofollow. Google documented this. Infinite scroll with no server-side pagination is uncrawlable. This audit shows which of these mistakes your series is making.

Frequently asked questions
What is pagination audit?
Walking a paginated series (category pages, blog archives) to check whether each page is set up correctly for crawling and indexing.
What is the biggest pagination mistake?
Canonicalising all paginated pages to page 1. It collapses the series, loses deep page internal links, and Google treats later pages as duplicates.
Should paginated pages be noindex?
Modern consensus: no. Noindex, follow eventually becomes noindex, nofollow per Google documentation. Keep them indexable and self-canonical.
What about rel="prev" and rel="next"?
Google deprecated them in 2019. Bing and Yandex still consume them. Low cost to add; not critical.
How to handle infinite scroll?
Serve server-rendered paginated URLs behind the infinite scroll. Googlebot crawls the URLs, users see the scroll. See Google's John Mueller's guidance.
What is a view-all page?
A single page containing all items from the series. Google used to recommend canonicalising paginated pages to view-all; this is no longer the preference.
How many pages deep should pagination go?
For SEO, 10 to 20 pages deep gets diminishing returns. Beyond that most link equity is consumed. Keep category depth sensible.
Should page 1 have a different canonical?
No. Page 1 self-canonicals to itself (not to the series root with no page parameter). Every page is self-canonical.
Does the tool detect crawl traps?
Yes. If every page returns identical content (same title, same canonical) the tool flags it.
What is the depth limit for audit?
Up to 30 pages per run via the Worker.
What about faceted navigation beyond pagination?
Different problem. See the Bulk Canonical Audit tool for filter / facet handling.
