What is a cron expression?
A compact string that schedules recurring tasks. Five fields: minute, hour, day-of-month, month, day-of-week. Each field accepts specific values or wildcards.
What does * mean?
Any value.
0 * * * * runs at minute 0 of every hour of every day.How is day-of-week numbered?
0 or 7 is Sunday. 1 is Monday. 6 is Saturday. Three-letter names (MON, TUE) also accepted.
What does "/5" mean in cron?
Step value.
*/5 * * * * runs every 5 minutes.Can cron run more often than once a minute?
Not with standard cron. For sub-minute scheduling you need a different scheduler (systemd timers, Kubernetes CronJob with workaround, custom script).
What is the maximum cron interval?
Once a year.
0 0 1 1 * runs at midnight on January 1st.How to run on the last day of the month?
Standard cron doesn't have L (last). Workaround: run on days 28-31 and check inside the script if it's the last day.
What is a quartz cron expression?
Six-field variant adding seconds. Used by Java-world schedulers (Quartz, Spring). Different format from UNIX cron.
Why isn't my cron firing?
Common causes: wrong user crontab, PATH issues inside the cron environment, timezone mismatch, exit code non-zero on first run.
What timezone does cron use?
The system timezone of the server. Change via /etc/timezone or TZ environment variable in the crontab.
