NRR / GRR Calculator

Net Revenue Retention and Gross Revenue Retention: the single metrics public SaaS valuations care about most. NRR above 120% is the enterprise SaaS north star. This calculator walks through the full cohort flow.
SaaS Metrics Intelligence
NRR above 120% means the business grows even if you stopped acquiring customers tomorrow.
NRR = (starting ARR − churn − contraction + expansion) ÷ starting ARR. Measured on the same cohort over the same period. The strongest SaaS companies reach 130%+ NRR. GRR strips out expansion to show pure retention. Together they tell you whether product value is being realised and expanded by existing customers.
Cohort inputs
Starting ARR (cohort beginning of period)
Only customers already there at the start: not new signups
Churned ARR
Full cancellations from this cohort
Contracted ARR (downgrades)
Reduced plan size, seat count, usage tier
Expansion ARR
Upgrades, more seats, more usage from the same cohort

Frequently asked questions
What is NRR?
Net Revenue Retention. Starting ARR minus churn minus contraction plus expansion, over starting ARR. The single most important SaaS metric for public market valuation.
What is GRR?
Gross Revenue Retention. Starting ARR minus churn minus contraction, over starting ARR. No expansion. Shows pure retention of existing dollars.
What NRR is "best in class"?
130%+ is elite (Snowflake, Datadog territory). 115 to 130% is great. 100 to 115% is acceptable. Below 100% means the cohort is shrinking.
What is a 120% NRR?
Existing customers paying 20% more a year later. Expansion exceeds churn by 20 percentage points. Suggests strong product-market fit.
What is the NRR-GRR spread?
NRR minus GRR. The expansion contribution. 20%+ spread means expansion is doing meaningful work. Below 10% means retention alone is carrying.
How is NRR different from gross dollar retention?
NRR includes expansion; GDR is the same as GRR. Terminology varies between SaaS and other verticals.
Should NRR be measured on logo or dollar cohort?
Dollar cohort. The whole point of NRR is to measure dollar movement in a fixed starting cohort.
How often is NRR measured?
Trailing twelve months is standard for board reporting. Quarterly or monthly for internal.
What drives NRR?
Expansion motion: upsell paths, usage-based pricing, net-new modules, consumption growth, seat expansion. Churn reduction matters but caps at 100%.
Does usage-based pricing raise NRR?
Yes typically. Customers who use more pay more. Snowflake and Datadog's elite NRR comes largely from usage-based pricing.
What is a "cohort" in NRR context?
The group of customers paying at the start of the period. NRR tracks what that same group pays at the end, excluding new customers added mid-period.
