Readability Score Analyzer

Analyse any text with six standard readability formulas: Flesch Reading Ease, Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level, Gunning Fog, SMOG, Automated Readability Index, and Coleman-Liau. Standard practice for regulated industries, enterprise content ops, and plain-language programs.
Content Intelligence
Enterprise content often reads at grade 14+. audience reality is grade 7–8.
Most B2B, financial, and healthcare content tests at a reading level above its target audience. The gap between what you write and what readers can process is the single biggest driver of dropoff. These scores quantify that gap. Compare against the target benchmark for your industry.

Frequently asked questions
What is a readability score?
A numeric estimate of how easy or hard a text is to read, based on sentence length, syllable count, word complexity. Multiple formulas with different takes.
Which score matters most?
Flesch Reading Ease (0-100, higher is easier) is the broad standard. Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level maps to US school grade (8-10 is readable).
What score should I aim for?
Marketing content: Flesch 60 to 70, grade 8 to 10. Technical content: grade 10 to 12 is acceptable. Legal/academic can go higher but readers suffer.
Does readability affect SEO?
Not directly as a ranking factor. Indirectly: lower bounce rate on readable content lifts rankings.
What is Gunning Fog?
A readability index weighting complex words heavily. Grade 12 means readable by a US high-school senior.
What is Dale-Chall?
A list-based formula using a dictionary of ~3,000 "easy" words. Words outside the list are "difficult". Different take than Flesch.
What is SMOG?
Simple Measure of Gobbledygook. Count polysyllabic words in a sample. Used for health literacy content.
Do all formulas agree?
Mostly, but they weight different things. Content heavy on technical jargon can score easy on Flesch (short sentences) and hard on Dale-Chall (uncommon words).
Does the tool count code blocks?
No. Code is excluded from the analysis for cleaner scoring.
Is lower-score always better?
No. A nuanced B2B whitepaper at Flesch 40 may be appropriate for its audience. Match score to audience.
What is grade level in Flesch-Kincaid?
US school grade. Grade 8 = typical 13-year-old reading level. Google tends to favour grade 8-10 for general-audience content.
