XML Sitemap Indexability Checker
Enter your sitemap URL and the tool crawls it (follows sitemap-index files), fetches each URL in the sitemap, and verifies that every page is indexable. Flags
noindex, redirects, 404s, and canonical conflicts.
Technical SEO Intelligence
A sitemap full of non-indexable URLs confuses search engines.
Your sitemap tells search engines what you want indexed. If 30% of those URLs redirect, 404, or carry noindex, you're sending mixed signals. Google's own documentation says sitemaps should contain only indexable canonical URLs. This tool checks every URL in your sitemap against those criteria.
1. Sitemap URL
We follow sitemap-index files up to 2 levels deep. Audits the first 1,000 URLs found.

Frequently asked questions
What does this tool do?
Fetches your XML sitemap, visits each URL, and reports whether it is indexable or blocked by robots, meta robots, canonical, status code, or other issues.
Why do sitemaps contain non-indexable URLs?
Common causes: a stale sitemap after a redesign, URLs set to noindex by the CMS, canonical pointing elsewhere, pages blocked in robots.txt. Each is a crawl-budget leak.
How large a sitemap can this tool handle?
Up to 10,000 URLs per run via the backend Worker. For larger sitemaps split into sitemap-index with chunks of 10k.
What is a sitemap-index?
A sitemap that lists other sitemaps. Google supports up to 500 sub-sitemaps of 50,000 URLs each. The Worker follows the index automatically.
Does Google require a sitemap?
No. Google can discover URLs via internal links. Sitemaps help on new sites, sites with poor internal linking, and sites with content that isn't linked from indexable pages.
What makes a URL "indexable"?
Returns 200 OK, not blocked in robots.txt, no noindex meta or X-Robots-Tag, canonical points to self (or absent), rendered content exists.
Should every indexable URL be in the sitemap?
Every URL in the sitemap should be indexable. Not every indexable URL needs to be in the sitemap (that's a design choice).
How often should sitemaps be audited?
After every release that touches URLs. Monthly for sites with active editorial flow.
What is a soft 404?
A page returning 200 OK but presenting a "not found" message. Google flags these in Search Console. See the Soft 404 Detector tool.
Can sitemaps contain redirects?
They shouldn't. The sitemap should list the final destination URL only. Redirects in sitemaps leak crawl budget.
What is lastmod and when does it help?
The last modification date for each URL. Google uses it as a hint for recrawl prioritisation. Only include accurate dates; wrong dates get ignored.
